Tolbert named to U.S. Collegiate National Team

Team USA Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Virginia Tech volleyball’s Jaila Tolbert has been named to the U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team – Detroit, which will compete in Detroit on June 22-July 1 as a 24-member team comprised of collegiate players, as announced by USA Volleyball on Tuesday afternoon.

“I am so honored and excited to have the opportunity to represent Virginia Tech and the United States on the Collegiate National Team – Detroit,” Tolbert shared. “I am looking forward to making an impact along side some of the best players in the country.

“The support from Hokie Nation has been overwhelming and I cannot thank my teammates and staff enough for their role in preparing me for this huge moment in my career.”

The CNT-Detroit squad, which is part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline and is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team, will train from June 22-26 at the University of Michigan. Afterward, the athletes will be assigned to one of two 12-member teams that will play three exhibition matches against each other at the Cobo Center from June 27, June 28 and June 30.

The matches are being held in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships under the same roof.

“Our Virginia Tech volleyball family is thrilled for Jaila to have the honor of wearing the USA uniform,” head coach Jill Wilson said. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime for her and an important step for our entire program as we gain higher level experience.”

Tolbert, a Minnesota native, was tabbed second-team All-ACC this past fall, as well as Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State. The right-side hitter recorded 20 matches of hitting north of .300, and owned a team-high 318 kills. Tolbert is the lone representative from the ACC on the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

The junior is one of five ACC volleyball players on the roster, and will be playing with Minnesota Select teammate Jasmyn Martin.

Athletes were selected through the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts held March 2-4 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. USA Volleyball released in March rosters for the CNT-China and CNT-Europe rosters. Tolbert tried out with teammate Rhegan Mitchell and 232 other athletes earlier in March.
