Five questions with Talyn Jackson

The early enrollee setter discusses her college transition, first spring tournament and more

Editor’s note: Every Wednesday throughout the offseason, we’ll catch up with volleyball student-athletes for five questions.

Talyn Jackson | Fr. | S | Gardnerville, Nev.

Q: How have you enjoyed the college lifestyle and how much do you miss high school?

JACKSON: “I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I like how the classes are here, with it not being set times consecutively all day. And I don’t miss high school at all (laughing).”

Q: How would you say the workload has been for you this semester?

JACKSON: “It hasn’t been too bad, I’m only taking four classes. So, I have a pretty easy schedule for the most part, which is good with getting use to everything here. It’s nice to have a few classes and not too much of a workload in my first college semester. I will be taking classes here this summer, but I’m kind of spreading it out, especially since I came early.”

Q: On the court, do you find yourself playing catch up or are you more comfortable now with a couple months of practice under your belt?

JACKSON: “At first I definitely thought I was playing catch up. It has been awesome with the girls, though. I got super close with them really quick and we connected easily. So now I feel really comfortable.”

Q: Last weekend was the first spring tournament for the team. How did it go for you competing as a college athlete?

JACKSON: “I was really nervous going into it because I didn’t know what to expect with not playing at that high-speed level. But having my teammates behind me, they were super supportive, made it a lot of fun. After a couple points went by, I got settled in – I kind of had to (laughing). At first I didn’t know what to expect, but now I know going forward.”

Q: What is one thing you are trying to improve upon heading into the fall season?

JACKSON: “Just being more of a leader because as a setter, that is a role you have to have. As a leader in that spot, you are kind of the quarterback of the team. So, I feel like I’m getting there right now. I feel more comfortable to talk louder in front of the team, but I hope to get completely comfortable. Just because I’m freshman shouldn’t matter.”
