Hokies prepared for Second Round match against Michigan State

The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team is set to take on national seven seed Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from DeMartin Stadium, with coverage available on Big Ten Network Plus.

The Hokies (10-9)
On Thursday night, Tech scored two goals in the span of three minutes early in the second half to advance past Air Force 2-0 at Thompson Field. Senior captains Collin Verfurth and Marcelo Acuna found the back of the net, while the Tech defense anchored by Ben Lundgaard kept a shutout.

The Hokies are into the Second Round for the second consecutive season, following their run to the Elite Eight in 2016.

Last year, Tech came across another Big Ten team in the form of No. 7 Indiana. The Hokies advanced 2-1 in overtime after Forrest White’s curled effort from 20 yards outs.

The Spartans (11-3-3)
Michigan State’s stout defense has only allowed 11 goals al season and is anchored by keeper Jimmy Hague. The redshirt senior has registered 10 shutouts on the season.

Up front, forwards Ryan Sierakowski leads the Spartans with 17 points from seven goals and three assists. DeJuan Jones is second with six goals and four assists.

In their last match on Nov. 5 State lost to Indiana 2-1 in the Big Ten Tournament.

The Series
The match Sunday will be the first ever meeting between the two sides on the pitch. Overall, Tech is 5-15-3 against teams currently in the Big Ten Conference.
