Hokies host Heels on Senior Day

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team will play host to No. 4 North Carolina in the final home game of the season on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Thompson Field. The game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.

The Hokies (7-7, 2-4)
Virginia Tech is coming off a defeat on the road to William & Mary on in midweek. Senior forward Marcelo Acuna scored his team-leading ninth goal early in the second half to even the contest at one, but the Tribe responded just 21 seconds later and added two insurance goals late in the game to secure the victory.

Goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard recorded eight saves in the game, increasing his league-leading total. The senior is second in the ACC with a .769 save percentage.

Sophomore forward Brendan Moyers recorded his first career point against the Tribe, tallying an assist on the goal by Acuna.

The Hokies are looking to defeat a top-five ranked opponent for the second time this year, following their victory over No. 1 Notre Dame 2-1 at Thompson Field on Sep. 22.

The Tar Heels (12-2-1, 4-1-1)
The No. 4 Tar Heels are coming off a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Old Dominion, their second consecutive double-overtime finish. Freshman Lucas del Rosario notched both goals for the Tar Heels, including the game-winner in the 102nd minute to earn the victory for the Heels.

On the season, senior forward Alan Winn paces the Tar Heels with eight goals and 17 points. Sophomore midfielder Cam Lindley is the team’s leading point-scorer with 21, and is second in the ACC with nine assists.

In goal, freshman Alec Smir has compiled a 0.75 goals against average in 11 contests, a mark that is good for second in the league.

The Tar Heels own a 3-1-1 record away from WakeMed Soccer Park, their home for the season.

The Series
North Carolina holds a 12-3-1 edge in the all-time series, which dates back to 1973. The Hokies will be looking to pick up their first win against the Tar Heels since 2011.
