Hokies begin ACC play on the road against Blue Devils

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team will travel to Durham, N.C. for a 7 p.m. kick against the Duke Blue Devils. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. For the Hokies, it will be the fifth consecutive game away from home to begin the season. The contest is the ACC opener for both clubs.

Duke (3-0-1) has started the season undefeated, after wins against UCF, Fordham and High Point in overtime. In their last match on Tuesday night, Duke tied Presbyterian 1-1.

Brian White leads the Blue Devils with three goals and six points. Markus Fjorloft and Ciaran McKenna each have two goals on the season and seven other players have registered a point.

In goal, Will Pulisic owns a .70 goals against average and has two shutouts on the season.

In the reverse fixture last season, Tech won a 3-1 game played in the rain at Thompson Field. Rory Slevin, Marcelo Acuna and Humberto Montero each found the net for Tech’s first win over Duke since 2004.

Tech has started the 2017 campaign 2-2, including a win over No. 14 Creighton, and most recently defeating Binghamton 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Acuna was on target twice for the Hokies, who came from behind to earn the victory. His three goals on the season pace Tech, followed by Collin Verfurth and James Kasak who each have tallied once.

Ben Lundgaard leads the ACC in saves with 20 on the season and his 5.0 saves per game is also tops in the conference.

Virginia Tech will host the Virginia Cavaliers at Thompson Field on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. It will be Tech’s first chance to play at home in 2017 after playing the opening five games away from home. The matchup with Virginia will be the first contest of the 2017-18 Commonwealth Clash contested each year between the two institutions.

Last year Tech won the Clash for the first time since the competition took its current format in in 2014-15.
