Acuna's two second half goals lead Tech to victory

HARRISONBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team defeated Binghamton 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Sentara Park. The win brought the Hokies’ record to 2-2 as they begin ACC play next weekend.
“I thought that we put a good effort in today,” said Mike Brizendine. “We were very unfortunate not to score earlier than we did. We hit everything else; the post, other players, the goalkeeper, but we weren’t able to score. This group has a lot of heart and pushed through and got the result we needed.”
The Hokies had good possession especially through midfield, leading to numerous opportunities. Marcelo Acuna, Jon Ingason and Brendan Moyers all were involved with efforts on target in the first half.
Binghamton (2-2) got on the scoresheet in the 35th minute through Nikos Psarras. The forward gained possession in the area, turned and fired a low shot into the corner, giving the Bearcats the 1-0 lead at the break.
After the intermission, Tech pressed forward, eager to equalize. Kristo Strickler saw a volley blocked in the 48th minute.
“I commend Binghamton for their effort today,” said Brizendine. “I thought they made things very difficult for us especially in the final third.”
Rory Slevin was fouled inside the area, leading to a penalty kick opportunity in the 70th minute. Acuna stepped to the spot and dispatched it to the right side of the net tying the game at one. From there, the Hokies keep up the pressure searching for the game-winner.
In the 82nd minute, Acuna picked up a ball from a defender and had a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper. The senior forward rounded the keeper and slotted home his third goal of the season.
The Hokies outshot the Bearcats 19-12 and earned six corners.
In goal, Ben Lundgaard made three saves, including one in the final minutes to secure Tech’s second win of the season.

The Hokies travel to Durham, North Carolina to take on the Duke Blue Devils on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
