The No. 17 Virginia Tech men’s soccer team lost 5-1 to the Omaha Mavericks on Sunday night.

“We made a couple of bad decisions and Omaha made us pay for it,” said head coach Mike Brizendine. “I applaud our second half effort and look forward to getting back on the field with these guys.”

The Mavs got on the board in the fifth minute through Elvir Ibisevic. The forward took a one-time shot from the top of the box that curled into the far post. Omaha doubled its advantage three minutes later when Ibisevic headed home a cross from Emmanuel Hamzat. Ibesevic completed his hat trick from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, firing his shot into the right hand corner of the net.

Additional Maverick goals were scored by Xavier Gomez and Hamzat, to push Omaha’s record to 2-0.

Marcelo Acuna opened his account for Tech with a headed goal off a service into the box from Humberto Montero. Acuna was a bright spot for Tech, holding up play well and getting off five shots on the night. Brendan Moyers also had a shot on target in the first half.

The Hokies had six shots and earned one corner during the game.

Omaha had 17 efforts at Ben Lundgaard’s goal including 10 on target. The senior goalkeeper made five saves.
