Tech unable to get the edge in penalty kicks to advance

NEWTON, Mass. – The ninth-seeded Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (10-4-4) tied the eighth-seeded Boston College Eagles (7-7-3) 2-2 on Wednesday night in the First Round of the ACC Tournament. The teams went to penalty kicks to decide who would advance to the Quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Boston College was able to finish 4-3 to advance.

The first half began with Boston College applying early pressure. Tech answered and controlled possession for most of the remaining 45 minutes. Alessandro Mion put the Hokies on the board in the 43rd minute when he fired off a shot pushed out by the goal keeper and finished on the rebound.

Boston College came out strong in the second half as they got the equalizer from Zeiko Lewis in the 56th minute. The Eagles were able to draw Ben Lundgaard out of goal for the open shot. Virginia Tech pulled ahead in the 85^th minute when Mion scored his second goal of the game with the assist credited to Juan Pablo Saavedra and Daniel Damiani. Boston College quickly answered when Zeiko Lewis scored again for the Eagles in the 86th minute, tying the game.

The first and second overtime periods came and went as neither team could finish on any quality chances forcing the game to penalty kicks. The Hokies and Eagles were tied going into the fifth round of kicks when they were successful the pressure was on Tech. Rory Slevin was up and hit the crossbar to miss the last kick.
