Hokies set for first road trip, travel to Marshall

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team takes to the road for the first time this spring, traveling to Marshall for a 4 p.m. match on Friday, Feb. 9 in Huntington, W.Va.

THE HOKIES (3-0, 0-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech is coming off a 4-2 win over SEC foe Missouri the last time out. The Hokies faltered on the doubles point, but rallied to win four singles matches. Tech’s 34th-ranked Natalie Novotna got the Hokies on the board with a win at the one while Elena Cerezo-Codina pushed Tech into the lead, winning at three. Katherine Butler took the win at five and Caroline Daxhelet secured the team win in a hard-fought three-set match on court two.

THE THUNDERING HERD (0-4, 0-0 C-USA)
Marshall was edged 4-3 by DePaul in the Herd’s last match. The Herd claimed the doubles point to get out to the 1-0 start. In singles, freshman Anna Smith picked up her first collegiate win on court four while Ana Marhuenda won at six. Marshall has just two seniors on its team, Stephanie Smith and Maddie Silver, who both earned C-USA All-Conference honors last season.

THE SERIES
Virginia Tech leads 14-9 all-time, but Marshall won last season 5-2. Novotna and Nancy Ghanem claimed singles wins for the Hokies. Stephanie Smith and Silver both picked up wins for Marshall.

UP NEXT: Virginia Tech returns home to host Liberty and Radford in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 17 beginning at 11 a.m.
