COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team had a solid showing in the first match of the fall season, advancing in both singles and doubles on Friday at the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic at JTCC in College Park, Maryland.

Shene Disbergen and Sarah Baron moved into the round of 16 for the Hokies in singles. The two also advanced in doubles with their respective partners Louisa Uscocovich and Nancy Ghanem.

Disbergen, seeded 23rd, rolled past Delaware’s Draga Sabotic in the opening round with straight set scores of 6-1, 6-0. In the second round, Disbergen had her hands’ full as she battled 10th-seeded Risa Nakagawa of Georgetown. After picking up the first set 6-4, Disbergen fell in the second by the same margin. She rallied to roll in the super tiebreaker 10-4.

Baron entered the field unseeded, but picked up a win over 20th seed Drew Spinosa of Georgetown in the opening round with a score of 6-3, 7-6(5). In the second round, Baron saw a familiar face in teammate Nancy Ghanem, who was seeded 13th. Baron picked up the 6-1, 7-5 win over her fellow Hokie.

Ghanem won her opening round match over George Washington’s Julia Herlogsson 6-1, 7-6(5).

Several other Hokies secured first round wins before falling the second. Fallon Delp picked up a win over Coppin State’s Ajila Hrnjic 6-0, 6-1 while Luisa Uscocovich defeated Delaware’s Amanda Studnicki 6-3, 6-1. McKenzie Collins knocked off CSU’s Tanna Nita 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles, Baron and Ghanem paird up for a 6-0 decision over Tinashe Gwaze and Precious Udofe of Coppin State. Disbergen and Uscocovich downed VCU’s Paola Delgado and Melissa Ifidzhen 6-4.

Action will continue on Saturday beginning with singles at 9 a.m.
