Tech opens fall season at Bedford Cup

BLACKSBURG – Eight members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will open the 2017 fall campaign, competing this weekend in the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic, Sept. 15-18.

The four-day event will be hosted by JTCC with singles matches beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday. In addition to the Hokies, other universities that will be present include: VCU, Coppin State, JMU, Georgetown, George Washington, Delaware, Townson, Coppin and Maryland.

Virginia Tech’s Nancy Ghanem enters the field with the highest seed for the Hokies at 10th. She receives a bye in the first round.

Seeded at 21st, Shene Disbergen will play against Coppin State’s Tinashe Gwaze in the opening round. Sarah Baron, who is the 23rd-seed, will go up against Delaware’s Draga Sabotic.

The Hokies’ roster this weekend will also include freshman Dori Mesmer, who comes to Tech as Maryland’s No. 14 tennis recruit (TennisRecruiting.net). She will be matched up with Arielle Shuren from Delaware in the opening round.

Sophomore Fallon Delp will be playing against Ajla Hrnjic from Coppin State while Sloan Barton will match up against 20th-seed AJ Gomer of Towson. McKenzie Collins will be going up against Maryland’s Zoe Kulkarni who is the 22nd- seed. Rounding out the Tech line up is sophomore Luisa Uscocovich who will face Sara Whited of Delaware.

In doubles action, 6th-seeded Disbergen and Uscocovich will start off with a bye while Ghanem and Baron will compete against Coppin State’s Precious Udofe and Gwaze.

Delp and Collins will face Victoria Kogan and Marie Decamps of George Washington. Completing Tech’s doubles lineup is Barton and Mesmer, squaring off against GW’s Diana Kussainova and Maria Siopacha.

Competition begins with singles matches on Friday morning to be followed by doubles.
