BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech lost to No. 5 North Carolina, 4-0, in ACC women’s soccer action Thursday night at Thompson Field in Blacksburg. With the loss, Tech falls to 7-5-4 overall and 1-4-3 in conference play. The Tar Heels improve to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in ACC competition.

The game was evenly matched throughout the opening minutes before UNC scored its first goal, by Julie Ashby from Joanna Boyles in the 15^th minute of action. The score remained 1-0 into the intermission.

In the second half, UNC added a goal by Abby Elinsky in the 74^th minute and followed that with a goal by Bridgette Andrzejewski just 14 seconds later. UNC’s Alea Hyatt wrapped up the scoring with a goal in the 87^th minute.

UNC outshot the Hokies 17-2, including 8-0 in shots on goal. Mandy McGlynn recorded four saves for Virginia Tech.

NOTES

The Hokies are now 2-14 all-time against UNC. All 16 meetings have occurred since Tech joined the ACC in 2004.

With her four saves, Mandy McGlynn now has 124 career saves, seventh-best on the Virginia Tech all-time list.

Tonight’s match begins a three-match home stand to wrap up the regular season. Tech hosts NC State on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. and Syracuse next Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Sunday will be the Hokies’ annual Senior Day. Tech will honor seniors Kallie Peurifoy, Michelle White, Kari Johnston, Alani Johnson and Madi Conyers in a ceremony before the match.

“I was pleased with the way we played the first half. I thought we held our own. We gave up a little bit of a sloppy goal on a set piece, but to their credit, they’re dangerous on set pieces. We knew that coming in and its unfortunate we gave that goal up.”

“I thought we played hard. That first half especially was a solid half for us. In the second half we came out and didn’t get a flow a little bit and they wore us down with the depth that they had on their side.”

“I thought we took a few more risks once we were down than we wanted to do. In the first half, we were a lot more solid. I’m sorry we had to chase the game after the first goal.”

“I was pleased with the work we put in that first half. We have to put 90 minutes together. I thought the back line played well. Carolina is a good team. They’re one of the top ranked teams in the country and have tremendous depth. “
