Alani Johnson scores lone goal in win over Longwood

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech defeated Longwood, 1-0, in women’s soccer action Monday night at Thompson Field. With the win, the Hokies improve to 5-0-1 overall, while the Lancers drop to 4-2 on the season.
Less than 10 minutes into the contest, Alani Johnson put the Hokies up on a cross from the left side by Kristina Diana. Tech continued the offensive push through the remainder of the half and the game, but could not net another shot.
Defensively, the Hokies were once again solid, as they collected their fourth consecutive shutout. Tech held the Lancers to three shots on the game and sophomore goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn recorded three saves.
Tech outshot the Lancers 17-3, including a 10-1 advantage in the first half. Tech also held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-0.
NOTES
The Hokies improve to 8-0 all-time against Longwood. Tech holds a 6-0 advantage in home matches against Longwood at Thompson Field.
Johnson recorded her third goal of the season in the win and the 23rd of her Virginia Tech career. She is the only Hokie with multiple goals this season. Diana recorded her first assist of the season.
This is the Hokies’ final home non-conference match of the season and the team’s final home match until hosting nationally ranked ACC foe Florida State on Sept. 24.
The Hokies return to action on Thursday night, as they travel to ETSU. Game time is 7 p.m.

“I thought we controlled much of the game; much of the tempo. I thought we did a good job with that. It was good to get the early goal. With all the chances we had tonight, we would have liked to score a second goal.”
“Part of it is the timing, running to the box and the ability to make good decisions around the goal. We rushed ourselves a few times and didn’t find the free player at times, as well. “
“I don’t think we were as hungry as we need to be around the goal. But overall, I think we controlled the ball and the tempo and I was happy with that aspect of the game.”
“It was a really good crowd tonight. The atmosphere in the stadium and the crowd, what they bring us has been tremendous. We really appreciate that. I would like to put a few more goals up on the board for them.”
