Hokies open home schedule with weekend series

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will open the 2017 home schedule this weekend with a pair of matches. Friday night, the College of Charleston comes to Thompson Field for a 7 p.m. match, while the University of Georgia is the opponent for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m..

The Hokies enter the weekend 1-0-1, following their West Coach start last week. Tech defeated home-standing San Diego, 1-0, in double overtime last Friday night and tied Pepperdine, 1-1, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon. Alani Johnson scored the game-winner on Friday night and Heather Timothy netted the Hokies’ lone goal on Sunday.

The Cougars enter the weekend 1-1 on the young season, with a 1-0 home win over Campbell and a 2-1 home loss to Coastal Carolina. The Hokies hold a 3-0 all-time advantage in the series, winning the last meeting, 3-0, in 2009 at Thompson Field. The Hokies played in the College of Charleston Tournament last season, but did not face the Cougars, defeating LSU and Mississippi State in their two matches.

Georgia also enters the weekend 1-1 on the season. The Bulldogs split a pair of home matches last weekend, losing to Wake Forest, 1-0, and defeating High Point, 1-0. This is the first meeting between the two schools. Georgia will open the weekend with a match at Charlotte on Friday night, before travelling to Blacksburg for Sunday’s contest.

Friday night’s match with be the Campers Reunion game and Sunday afternoon’s match will be part of Welcome Back Weekend for Virginia Tech students. The first 100 Tech students will receive free t-shirts and there will be pizza while it lasts.

Live stats will be available for both matches. Both matches will be live streamed. The Friday night match against College of Charleston will be shown by HokieVision Live and the Sunday match against Georgia will be shown on ACC Network Extra.
