Hokies complete preseason action with 2-0 win over Charlotte

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech defeated Charlotte, 2-0, in women’s soccer scrimmage action Saturday night at Thompson Field.

Tech took and 1-0 lead into the intermission. In the second half, Tech took control of the game and added its second goal in the final three minutes, as Jess Boytim found a wide-open Chandler McDaniel to give the Hokies the 2-0 victory.

The two teams recorded just one shot each in the first half, but Tech outshot the 49ers, 7-1 in the second half. Tech’s three goalkeepers did not face a shot-on-goal in the contest.

NOTES

The two teams play a modified game. Instead of the customary 45 minute halves, the teams played two 30 minute periods.

This is the final of two preseason exhibitions for the Hokies. Tech tied Liberty, 1-1, on Tuesday night.

Tech begins the regular season on Friday, Aug. 18, as they play the University of San Diego on the Toreros home pitch.

QUOTING CHUGGER ADAIR

“I think it was a good result for us in the end. In the first 30 minutes, Charlotte played really well. They’re a good team, a good side. It was a good battle for us throughout.”

“I thought we were slow out of the chute and didn’t recognize some opportunities to possess early in the first third. As the game progressed, we made some better decisions. We were able to possess a little more and assert a little more tempo on the game, which helped us overall.”

“They’re a good side that will get some wins this year and I thought we struggled to deal with that. I thought in the second period, we were much better in possession than we had been in the first period. I think we created enough chances. We made some poor decisions in the attacking third, but its early days as far as training and we have to get better there. A shutout is something that is good, as well.”
