A goal by senior forward Murielle Tiernan in the 109th minute gave the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Boston College on Sunday, at Newton Soccer Stadium, in Newton, Massachusetts.

Tiernan dribbled the ball down the middle of the pitch and ripped a right footed shot into the upper 90 of the net from 30-yards out to score her second goal of the game. Tiernan, the program’s all-time leader in game-winning goals, scored her fourth game winner of the season and 22nd of her career. The Ashburn, Virginia, native also recorded her second multi-goal game of the year. The last time Tiernan scored two or more goals in a contest was during Tech’s 2-1 win over in-state rival William & Mary on Sept. 4.

Both teams played with a strong offensive attack in another back-and-forth affair. Tech (10-4-1, 2-3-1) tallied 17 shots compared to Boston College’s (10-4-1, 2-4-0) 19, as both squads placed nine on-frame in 110 minutes of play. The Eagles also tallied an 11-5 edge in corner kicks.

Junior forward Alani Johnson came off the bench midway through the first half to put the Hokies’ on the scoreboard first in the 29th minute. The Virginia Beach native netted her sixth goal of the season, as freshman midfielder Lilly Weber placed a through ball to a waiting Johnson inside the 10-yard line. Johnson took her first strike at the net, placing the ball far left post past a diving Alexis Bryant for the early 1-0 advantage.

Fresh out of the locker room, the Eagles controlled possession for the majority of the second half and made the most out of their allotted opportunities at the net. Boston College scored two goals off back-to-back penalty kicks in the 62nd minute. Redshirt senior forward McKenzie Meehan scored the equalizer, followed by freshman defender Samantha Hiatt for the go-ahead score.

Down 2-1 with 15 minutes left in regulation, Tiernan tallied her first goal of the game off a corner kick from Marie Johnston in the 76th minute. Tiernan, a 2016 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate, tied the game at two apiece, forcing the Hokies’ into their second overtime match of the season.

After 20 extra minutes of play in inclement weather conditions, it only took one shot from Tiernan to give the Hokies a 3-2 victory over the Eagles. Freshman goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made seven saves in her 15th start as a Hokie, while Bryant stopped six.

“I’m very proud of the team and their effort today. It was a challenging day and a challenging game against Boston College. BC is a very good attacking team, but the girls came ready to play and that was important.”

“It was good to go into halftime with the lead. We were a little bit flat during the game. It was very difficult as far as the wetness on the field overall. It rained all day, and the field conditions were not ideal. We gave up two penalty kicks really quick, so that was unfortunate, and we had to recover.”

“I’m proud to see Mur (Murielle Tiernan) get the tying goal, and then to get the game winner. She grinded it out, especially the second goal, finishing it from 30-yards out. We have to continue to build off this. We took six points on the road, and we are happy with that. We are looking to move forward and try to get another win over a very good Louisville team.”

With today’s victory, the Hokies are 4-7-2 all-time against Boston College … The Hokies have recorded back-to-back victories over the Eagles for the first time in program history … The last time Tech played against Boston College was during the 2013 season, as the team claimed a 1-0 victory on Sept. 22, in Newton, Massachusetts … Tiernan had a game-high five shots, recording four shots on-goal for the Hokies … Tech is now 7-0-1 when scoring two or more goals this season … Tiernan (7 G) owns a team-best seven goals, pacing the team with 14 points, followed by Johnson with 12 points (6 G).

NEXT UP

The Hokies return to Thompson Field on Sunday, Oct. 16, for a 1 p.m. match against Louisville.

Sunday’s match is the Hokies’ annual “Pink Match,” and all fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The first 100 fans through the gate will receive a free VT pink water bottle.

It’s also “Senior Day,” and Tech’s eight seniors – Jordyn Brock, Candace Cephers, Sydney Curtis, Bria Dixon, Blayne Fink, Marie Johnston, Kallie Peurifoy and Murielle Tiernan – will be honored prior to first kick.
