Hokies dominate VaSID All-State Wrestling Team

FERRUM, Va. – Virginia Tech grabbed seven spots on the first team and all three major awards on the 2018 Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State Wrestling Team. Jared Haught was named Wrestler of the Year following his NCAA runner-up finish, while Hunter Bolen grabbed Rookie of the Year honors. Tony Robie earned Coach of the Year to complete the sweep of this year’s major hardware.

Haught was an NCAA finalist at 197 pounds this year, earning his third All-America finish. He is one of only four Virginia Tech wrestlers in history to make All-America three times. Haught also won the ACC Tournament this year, his second straight title, and closed his season with a 30-3 record.

Bolen was an NCAA qualifier this season at 174 pounds and was of only 16 true freshmen to compete at the 2018 NCAA Championships. He earned an automatic bid to nationals after placing second at the ACC Tournament, and posted a 21-12 final record in his rookie campaign.

Robie led the Hokies to their second straight ACC title, and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll with a 14-3 overall record and a 4-1 mark in ACC duals. Robie had three wrestlers earn All-American this season, including a national finalist (Haught). He led Virginia Tech to its sixth consecutive top 10 finish at the NCAA Tournament, and was an NWCA National Coach of the Year semifinalist.

Joining Haught and Bolen on the All-State first team from Virginia Tech were Dennis Gustafson (133), Brent Moore (141), Ryan Blees (149), David McFadden (165) and Zack Zavatsky (184). B.C. LaPrade (157) and Andrew Dunn (285) were named to the second team.
