Tech falls to No. 17 Tennessee, but helps set college football attendance mark

Virginia Tech should remain in the college football record books for a long time, as the Hokies played No. 17 Tennessee on Saturday night in the Battle at Bristol held at Bristol Motor Speedway and the game drew 156,990 fans. The crowd broke college football’s single-game attendance mark, surpassing the 115,109 fans that witnessed Michigan and Notre Dame at Michigan Stadium in 2013. Despite out-gaining Tennessee 400-330 yards and getting 127 yards rushing from Travon McMillian, Tech lost 45-24 to the Volunteers and fell to 1-1 on the season. The Hokies now get ready to open ACC play with a home game Saturday against Boston College in a contest that marks both White Effect and Military Appreciation Day. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.

Notable alums make trip to Battle at Bristol

Numerous notable former Virginia Tech football players made the trip to Bristol, Tennessee to support the Hokies in their game against Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway and to be a part of the experience. The list of former players included Bruce Smith, who participated in the coin toss, Michael Vick, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Jones, André Davis, Kendall Fuller, Kyshoen Jarrett, Steve Johnson and others. Former Tech coach Frank Beamer – who coached all of these players except for Smith – also was in attendance and was recognized during the game. Beamer received arguably the loudest ovation among those recognized throughout the evening.

Tech women’s soccer team blasts two more foes

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team served as the host for a tournament this past weekend and the No. 18 Hokies rolled to two wins, beating Boston University and Indiana by 3-0 scores to move to 7-1 on the season. Madi Conyers scored two goals on the weekend and goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn recorded both shutouts, saving five shots against Boston University and three shots against Indiana. Tech concludes non-conference action tonight with a home game against Longwood at 4 p.m. Mikayla Mance and the Hokies open their ACC slate this Friday at Virginia.

Athlete of the Week

Madi Conyers
(Women's Soccer • Junior • M • Chesterfield, Va.)
Madi Conyers broke out of a mild scoring slump by scoring goals in each of the Hokies’ wins at the Virginia Tech Tournament this past weekend. She scored the game winner against Indiana and scored the final goal in the Hokies’ win over Boston University. The goals marked her first two of the season and the fourth and fifth of her career.  

Getting to know ... Blayne Fink

Blayne Fink is a goalkeeper on the Tech women’s soccer team. The redshirt junior from Chesterfield, Virginia answered a few questions about herself to help fans get to know her as a person and a women’s soccer player.
Q: What differences are there from your hometown to Blacksburg?
BF: Fortunately, my hometown of Chesterfield, Virginia, and Blacksburg are very similar. I love both of them. However, I think Blacksburg is a little more “small town” compared to home. The community here is really tight knit. Blacksburg also offers a lot of recreation, such as hiking or tubing, within a short distance. It’s easy to do a lot in one day with little travel.
Q: Where are your favorite spots to go on campus?
BF: Not sure if this is considered on campus, but Cabo Fish Taco is always a go-to. Nothing beats their Taco Tuesday deals. I also love the Moss Arts Center. I spend a lot of time in there because of my major [multimedia journalism], and I think it’s an awesome building for hands-on learning.
Q: What got you involved with soccer?
BF: I think, like most 4 or 5 year olds, my parents signed me up to play rec soccer, and it just grew from there. I absolutely loved it. My dad also paid me $1 for every goal I scored when I was little, so I’m sure that made me love it even more.
Q: If you could switch places with another Tech athlete, who would it be?
BF: Probably a football player, so I can run out of the tunnel on a Thursday night.
Q: What has been your favorite memory as a Hokie?
BF:The 2014 Tech vs. Virginia football game.
Q: How has your time as a Hokie been so far?
BF: Best years of my life. Without a doubt. I have wanted to be a Hokie my whole life, but to actually be a student here and be a part of this awesome community is amazing. The people I have met here and the doors that have opened because I chose to attend Virginia Tech are something that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else.


Both Tech golf teams open fall season

The Virginia Tech golf teams opened the fall season this week, with the men’s team playing at the Marshall Invitational held at Berry Hill Country Club in Charleston, West Virginia, and the women’s team competing at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Tech men will be led by senior Joey Lane, who notched two major wins this season (VSGA State Amateur and the Eastern Amateur). On the women’s side, five letterwinners return from last year’s inaugural season, including redshirt sophomores Amanda Hollandsworth and Allison Woodward. The men’s team plays in five tournaments this fall, while the women’s squad plays in four.

Battle at Bristol -- a spectacle at the speedway!

 

Officials at Bristol Motor Speedway made the Battle at Bristol a memorable event complete with live cut-ins from Good Morning America, the broadcast of ESPN's College GameDay, the recognition of governors, former coaches and former NFL stars, and a stirring pregame ceremony. Fireworks, a rousing rendition of the national anthem by Jennifer Nettles, a flyover and a red, white, and blue card stunt turned the speedway into a display of patriotism right before the kickoff of a game that set college football’s single-game attendance record.
