Tech concludes 2018 Men's NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships

Shinholser, Schiesl finish top-20 in platform

MINNEAPOLIS – The Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2018 NCAA Championships on Saturday with divers Thomas Shinholser and Ben Schiesl finishing in the top-20 of the Platform at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Senior Shinholser and junior Schiesl put up top-20 scores in the platform on the final day of competition at the national championships. Shinholser took 18th with a tally of 336.55 while Schiesl was just behind in 19th with 334.65.

“The men did a real nice job for us out here,” said head coach Ned Skinner. “We appreciate the years of dedication of our seniors, and they mean very much to our program. Ben did an outstanding job all week and our swimmers performed well. We return many of these men next year and want to achieve so much more.”

Junior Norbert Szabo led the way in the pool, finishing 30th in the 200 fly with a time of 1:44.01. Fellow junior Ian Ho recorded the fifth fastest time in program history in the 100 free, placing 36th with a time of 43.51.

Freshman Lane Stone was 36th in the 1650 free, recording a time of 15:03.94.

Seniors Mauro Castro-Silva and Jack Gigliotti also competed in platform placing 42nd (252.15) and 43rd (251.35), respectively.
