Hokies ready for 2018 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships

Tech begins competition Thursday in Minneapolis, Minn.

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving team is sending seven to compete at the 2018 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships beginning Thursday morning at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

COMPETING FOR THE HOKIES
Lane Stone – The Tech freshman has made a mark on the program in his rookie season, setting new program records in the 500 free, 1650 free and 1000 free. On Friday he will take to the pool for the 500 freestyle in which he owns the 16th fastest time in the country. He placed 11th at the ACC Championships in the event. Stone will also be in the pool for the 200 free and 1650 free. He placed seventh in the 200 and eighth in the 1650 at ACCs.

Ian Ho – The junior is making a return trip to the NCAAs, competing in the 50 free and 100 free events. He placed fifth in the 50 at the ACC Championships with a school record setting time of 19.34.

Norbert Szabo – Tech junior Szabo is returning to NCAAs again this season, competing for the Hokies in three events including the 200 IM, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 fly. Szabo took silver in the 200 IM at the ACC Championships and turned in a 13th place finish in the 200 fly. He owns the 11the fastest time in the country in the 200 IM.

Ben Schiesl – Returning to NCAAs again this season, the Tech junior is set to compete in all three events. He placed 20th last season at NCAAs in the platform event. At this year’s diving zones, Schiesl earned automatic qualifying spots in the 1-meter and 3-meter and claimed an at-large spot in the platform.

Thomas Shinholser – Shinholser is making his fourth consecutive trip to NCAAs after qualifying in all three events at diving zones. In 2015, Shinholser placed in the top-25 in all three events at NCAAs and was an honorable mention All-American on the platform in 2014. This season, Shinholser claimed first in the platform at zones and was fifth at ACC Championships.

Jack Gigliotti – The Tech senior is making his first trip to the NCAA Championships, competing in the 1-meter and platform. He earned an automatic qualifying finish of sixth in the 1-meter and had an at-large finish of 10th in the platform event.

Mauro Castro-Silva – The senior is making his final trip to the NCAAs, competing in the platform event for the Hokies. He claimed third at NCAA zones to earn the automatic bid.
