Tech ready for 2018 Men's ACC Swimming Championships

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s swim team is set to open the 2018 ACC Men’s Swimming Championships, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 21. First swim event is slate to start at 4 p.m. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Tech finished fourth at last season’s ACC Men’s Championship and return several top-10 finishers for this year. Michael Craddock was fifth in the 1650 freestyle while teammate Ian Ho finished eighth in the 50 free. Norbert Szabo added a seventh place finish in the 200 IM and added an eighth place finish in the 200 freestyle.

The Hokies were also strong in the freestyle events with Ho, Jake Lamparella, Harrison Pierce returning from a 200 medley relay team that claimed fourth last season. The same trio was also part of an NCAA team that took 24th in the 800 free relay.

In addition, Ho and Pierce were members of the 200 free relay team that placed sixth at last season’s ACCs as well as the 400 free relay team that claimed 10th.

Four freshmen are also set to compete at their first ACC Championships including, Thomas Hallock, Lasse Pittioni, Lane Stone and Sam Tornqvist.

Tech enters the week in third place after the diver’s competed during last week’s ACC Women’s Championships. Thomas Shinholser placed fifth in the platform event while teammate Ben Schiesl was seventh in both the platform and the 1-meter.

The ACC enters championship week with several teams ranked in the CSCAA Top-25: NC State (5th), Louisville (14th), Notre Dame (19th), Virginia Tech (20th), Florida State (21st), Virginia (23rd) and Georgia Tech (RV). Tech men have ACC dual wins over Duke, Florida State and Virginia this season.
