H2Okies earn CSCAA Scholar All-America Team recognitions

15 student-athletes also garner individual honors from the national organization

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs have been named Scholar All-America Teams for the spring 2017 semester by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America, the organization announced Wednesday.

The award marks the men’s squad’s first team recognition of the season while the women pick up their second honor of the season after turning in a spring GPA of 3.53. 15 H₂Okies were also named to CSCAA Scholar All-American Teams.

The selections recognize students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The team Scholar All-America honors are given to team who finish with a 3.0 or higher for the spring semester.

“Coach Ned Skinner has shown at Virginia Tech how you can balance excellence in the classroom and the pool,” CSCAA Executive Director Joel Shinofield said. “We are very fortunate to have schools like Virginia Tech and people like President Sands and Director of Athletics Whit Babcock who support these exceptional student-athletes.”

The awards wrap up another successful academic season for the H₂Okies. Recently, Caroline Buscaglia, Maggie Gruber, Jessica Hespeler, Ashlynn Peters, Brandon Fiala, Ben Schiesl, Mauro Castro Silva and Ian Ho were all named to the All-ACC Academic Team. The women H₂Okies tied with Duke, Florida State and Miami for the second-most honorees with four apiece.

Buscaglia, a political science major, added the All-Academic Team selection to a senior campaign which also saw her receive the prestigious ACC Postgraduate Scholarship. Gruber was named to the All-Academic Team for a third time. This season, Fiala is the only male swimming and diving student-athlete to be named to the All-Academic team for the fourth time.
