GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women’s swimming and diving team and the men’s diving team wrapped up day two of the 2016 ACC Championships on Thursday night.

Jessica Hespeler earned the Hokies 20 points after swimming a 4:41.26 to come in first in the B final of the 500 free. The time is the second-fastest time in school history, trailing only Erika Hajnal who swam 4:40.03 in 2010. Jessica Arnold also scored points for Tech in the event as she swam a 4:49.96.

Fiona Donnelly earned 17 points with an NCAA B cut time of 1:58.93 in the 200 IM and finished second in the B Final. Holly Harper earned 12 points in the 200 IM also with a NCAA B cut time as she swam a 2:00.84.

The Hokies currently sit in seventh place in the standings with 203 points and are just 39 points back from being in the top five, trailing sixth place Notre Dame who has 219 points and fifth place Duke with 242.

In men’s diving, Mauro Castro-Silva came in sixth place in the men’s 1-meter finals with a score of 319.65. Ben Schiesl finished eighth in the finals with as core of 277.00. Four Tech divers in total earned 75 points as Logan Stevens and Eduardo Castro-Silva also contributed. The combined points from the 1-meter and 3-meter men’s events equals 159. The next closest men’s team is Georgia Tech who has 96.

“I’m very pleased with the men’s 1-meter event. Mauro Castro-Silva making his second A final, freshman Ben Schiesl with his first A final and Logan Stevens just barely out with a great B finish was very exciting. We also got a strong finish from another freshman in Eduardo Castro-Silva and overall we rounded out another high-scoring event for the men’s divers,” head diving coach Ron Piemonte said.

Preliminaries begin again tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. The finals for those events with the women’s 3-meter as well as the 400 medley relay will start at 6 p.m. and be carried live on ESPN3.
