Perren Young
Head Spirit Coach
Spirit (Cheer, Dance, HokieBird - Mascot)

Responsibilities: Young oversees all operations of the Virginia Tech spirit squads, including cheerleaders, HighTechs and Hokie Bird. Young’s oversight includes organizing practices, weight lifting times, appearances and game day activities associated with the spirt squads while also designing and ordering all practice and performance gear for the teams. In addition, Young assists cheerleaders with proper stunting, basket, tumbling and pyramid techniques while coaching the teams on football and basketball game days. Young also choreographs the cheerleaders’ national’s routines along with other game day performances. Under Young’s leadership the spirit squads host several cheer and dance clinics throughout the season for area youth.

Joined VT Staff: July 2013 (full-time)

At Virginia Tech: Coached the HighTechs to their highest finish in program history at NDA Nationals, placing third in the Division 1A Team Performance in 2014.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Served as Ole Miss Assistant Cheerleading Coach, 2010-13, helping to coach the team to their Collegiate World Championship win in 2012. Young attended Ole Miss where she cheered 2006-10, earning a spot on the Nationals Team three of her four seasons. She served as cheerleading captain 2008-10 and was named the Most Valuable Cheerleader 2009-10.

Education: University of Mississippi, 2010 (B.S. Exercise Science)

Personal: Young is from Germantown, Tenn. and currently resides in Blacksburg.
