Responsibilities: Shuman helps out with the implementation of strength and conditioning programs for football, working with Mike Gentry, the associate AD for athletic performance, and also with Jarrett Ferguson, the senior director for football.  

Joined VT Staff: 2012

At Virginia Tech: After receiving his undergraduate degree in 2008, Shuman served as a graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning program while working on his master’s degree. He later was hired on a full-time basis and handled the strength and conditioning needs for the sports of men’s and women’s track and field, lacrosse, golf, men’s soccer and men’s tennis. In May of 2015, he was moved into the role of helping with the football program.

Education: Virginia Tech, 2008 (B.A. in apparel, housing and resource management); Virginia Tech, 2012 (master’s in curriculum and instruction).

Of Note: Shuman played football at Virginia Tech and was a three-year starter. He started at left guard as a redshirt sophomore before being moved to center after the season and starting two years at that position.

In strength and conditioning, Shuman holds the following certifications: SCCC (strength and conditioning coach certified), USAW (USA weightlifting), CTPS (certified tennis performance specialist), FMS (functional movement screening) and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

Personal: A native of Fork Union, Va., Shuman attended Fork Union High School, and his father serves as the head football coach of the Fork Union postgraduate team. Shuman lives in Blacksburg.
