BLACKSBURG - Sophomore Carrie Eberle spun a one-hit shutout in an eight inning complete game effort and senior Caroline Schoenewald delivered with the game-winning RBI double in extra innings as Virginia Tech topped Liberty, 1-0, in extra innings at Tech Softball Park on Tuesday night.

Liberty (30-11) was hitting .299 as a team entering the midweek matinee but Eberle shut the Flames down to the tune of her fourth shutout of the season for the Hokies. Tech (15-23) has now won three straight and four of its last six games in the friendly confines of Tech Softball Park.

In the international tiebreaker, Liberty started the top of the eighth with a runner on second base. The runner broke for the third with the bunt attempt on but junior Sierra Walton gunned her down with junior Caitlyn Nolan covering for the first out of the inning. Eberle got the next two batters to groundout to retire the side.

With one down and pinch runner Casey Barrett at second base, Schoenewald dropped an 0-1 pitch into left field that drove in the game-winning run. It was Schoenewald’s second two-bagger of the game, giving her two multi-double games in 2018. She now has six games multi-hit games this season.

Only one ball left the infield off of Eberle and that came on a fly out to Schoenewald in center field in the first inning. Liberty’s lone base hit of the day was an infield single that trickled up the first base line. At one point, Eberle retired 12 straight batters between the final out of the second and the second out of the sixth. Eberle also went 1 for 2 on the day, reaching base twice on a walk and a single through the left side.

The Hokies return to action tomorrow when they travel to Radford for a 7 p.m. contest.
