Harper advances at 2018 NCAAs

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Mitch Harper advances to the second round of the 2018 NCAA Men’s Singles Championship with a win on Wednesday morning at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Harper, ranked 29th, squared off against Tulsa’s 68th-ranked Majed Kilani. The two traded points early before Kilani pulled ahead to a 5-2 lead in the opening set. Harper looked to battle back, cutting it to 5-4, but Kilani scored the final point needed to take the set.

In the second set, the two were tied at 4 with Harper taking the 5-4 advantage on serve. He broke Kilani to win the set 6-4. In the final set, Harper took control early and was up 3-1. Kilani narrowed the lead, closing to 4-3, but Harper rolled to the final points to win the set 6-3.

Harper will be back on the court Thursday at 8 a.m. to face Vanderbilt’s No. 26 Cameron Klinger. The Hokies will also have doubles team No. 27 Henrik Korsgaard and Alexandre Ribeiro on court against UCF’s No. 8 Korey Lovett and Eero Vasa, set for 12:30 p.m.
