Tech claims ITA Atlantic Region honors

BLACKSBURG – Mitch Harper has been named the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch while Martin Sayer is the tasc Performance ITA Assistant Coach of the Year.

Harper has been strong for the Hokies all season and is currently ranked 29th in the ITA singles standings. He has tallied a 14-6 record at the one this spring, including an impressive 9-2 record to close out dual play. Harper has posted 13 wins over opponents currently ranked in the ITA, including three ranked 30th or better.

The junior won the Milwaukee Classic back in the fall and competed at ITA Fall Nationals. This spring he helped lead the Hokies wins over then-ranked No. 12 Florida State, No. 43 Miami, No. 41 Louisville and No. 43 Virginia.

This was Sayer’s third season with the program, helping to guide Tech to a 17-8 overall record, including a 7-5 tally in the ACC. During 2018, the Hokies defeated 12th-ranked Florida State, 43rd-ranked Miami, 41st-ranked Louisville and three-time defending national champions Virginia, marking the first win over the ‘Hoos since 2003.

Harper will be back on the court Wednesday as he opens play at the NCAA Singles Championship. His teammates Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro will be on the court Thursday in the first round of doubles championship.
