Tech signs Commonwealth's top two golfers

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s golf program has announced that Connor Johnson, Jr. and Drew Brockwell, the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked junior golfers, respectively, in the state according to Junior Golf Scoreboard, have signed national letters of intent to attend Virginia Tech and play golf for the Hokies in Fall 2018. Teammates and co-captains at St. Christopher’s School, they led their team to the 2015 and 2017 Virginia Independent School State Championship.

Johnson, from Richmond, Virginia, is an honor student, member of both the Honor Council and Student Council, and a World Ambassador at St. Christopher’s, where he was captain of the team his junior and senior years. He was the qualifying medalist for the 2017 Virginia State Junior Match Play Championship with scores of 68-69, finished fifth in the Virginia Junior State Amateur and sixth in the prestigious Bobby Chapman Invitational. In 2016, he finished fourth in the stroke play qualifying of the Virginia State Amateur and qualified for the U.S. Junior. He placed 29th in the Optimist International Junior Championship in 2015 at PGA National and fourth in the Optimist Tournament of Champions. Connor represented the Virginias team in both the Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational and the Virginias/Carolinas Junior Team Matches in 2016 and 2017. He was an All-Prep League selection in 2015 and named to the All-State team in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Brockwell, from Chesterfield, Virginia, is a three-year captain at St. Christopher’s. In 2016, he won the MAPGA Kingsmill Junior Championship and qualified for the U.S. Junior. This past summer, he tied for second in the stroke play qualifying for the Virginia State Junior Match Play Championship with scores of 68-70 and advanced to the semifinals. In 2015, he shot 67-71-71 to finish sixth in the IMG World Championships at Torrey Pines. He is a three-time selection to the Virginias team for the Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational and represented the Virginias in the Virginias/Carolinas Junior Team Matches in 2016 and 2017. Drew was an All-Prep League selection the last three years and was named All-State in 2015 and 2017. In addition, he qualified for the Virginia State Amateur Championship the last three years, while finishing third in the stroke play portion this year.

"Long-time teammates and best friends, Connor and Drew both have outstanding records and a wealth of experience on the national level,” Virginia Tech head coach Jay Hardwick said. “They each have tremendous potential and have pushed each other to improve and it will be special for them to continue this relationship in college. More importantly, they are terrific young men and quality individuals who should have a major impact on our team’s success in the coming years.”
