Hokies set for opening weekend of NCAA Tournament

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team is in the midst of the program’s best season, racking up 13 wins for the first time which included five ACC victories. The 2018 squad placed four players on the league’s First Team and won a game in the ACC Tournament for the first time. But this past Sunday night, the team reached another milestone, earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament, the program’s first.

Tech is one of two teams that will be making its NCAA debut in 2018, joining Mercer, the SoCon Champions.

The Hokies will face the Georgetown Hoyas (12-6) who received an at-large selection after finishing 8-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.

Friday’s First Round contest will be played at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. UNC, the national 2 seed are the hosts, however their lacrosse stadium is under construction and Kenan Stadium is the site of the campus’ graduation ceremonies.

Tech has seen seven teams that have made the field; Denver, Syracuse, Virginia, Boston College, JMU, Colorado and UNC.

The Hoyas feature five All-Conference performers in Taylor Gebhardt, Natalia Lynch, Michaela Bruno, Haelle Chomo and Mollie Miller. Gebhardt leads GU in scoring, tallying 60 points, including 50 goals.

The Hokies and Hoyas have two common opponents in 2018, the Denver Pioneers and Delaware Blue Hens. Tech defeated DU and Delaware in March. In BIG EAST Conference play, Georgetown defeated the Pioneers 8-7, but fell in a rematch in the BIG EAST Tournament on May 3. The Hoyas defeated Delaware 12-8 in early March.
