BLACKSBURG – Taylor Caskey scored the game’s opening goal, before Paige Petty doubled the advantage a minute later and the Hokies got out to a 7-1 start, as they went on to rout VCU 22-7 Wednesday.

The Hokies (8-3) recorded 20 goals for the second time in 2018, with eight different players registering goals.

Tech was perfect clearing the ball (14 for 14) and took advantage of its free position opportunities converting five of 10 tries.

“We won a lot of draw controls today which was huge for us,” head coach John Sung said.

Tech dominated the draw, winning 22 of 31 in the game, setting up the offense and not giving the Rams a chance to counter. Kelly Glatthorn recorded a career best eight draw controls on the afternoon and Tristan McGinley had seven of her own.

VCU was led in scoring by Molly Barcikowsi. The junior attacker scored twice and assisted on four other Ram goals. Keriann McTavish added two goals for the Rams (2-6).

Paige Petty had another solid game in the midfield, recording seven points (five goals, two assists) and also collecting three draws and a ground ball.

“It was good to see the young kids get in there and do some things today,” Sung said. “Sarah Lubnow got a few goals, Carly Harris made her first career save, I’m really happy and excited for her.”

Lubnow and Harris were two of nine freshmen to see time Wednesday afternoon as the Hokies rotated players into the mix ahead of a tough road game on the weekend.

Defensively, the Hokies rotated three goalies with Meagh Graham earning the win making five saves. Freshman Morgan Berman made three saves in 23 minutes of work and Carly Harris made her debut for Tech, stopping the only shot she faced.

Next up: Tech travels to Burlington, North Carolina for a matchup with Elon on Saturday, March 24th. The Hokies and Phoenix are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
