Hokies go back-to-back, defeat Radford 20-2

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team triumphed over Radford by a score of 20-2 on Saturday night. With the win, the No. 20 Hokies improve to 6-1 on the season 1-0 in conference play. Radford falls to 1-2.

Tech led from the start as Tristan McGinley scored the game’s opening goal in just 34 seconds. The Hokies kept applying pressure, putting up 13 goals in the first half while keeping a shutout. Radford did not get on the board until the 22:57 mark in the second period.

Zan Biedenharn led all scorers in the game with seven points (three goals and four assists). A trio of Hokies scored three goals; Tristan McGinley, Marissa Davey and Emma Harden. Taylor Caskey dished out three more assists to take her tally to 13 on the season. Twelve Hokies got on the score sheet, a season-high.

Mary Claire Byrne had another solid performance in midfield, grabbing three groundballs and causing two turnovers. Freshman Mary Clare McCarthy saw extended minutes in the game and racked up a team-high four draw controls and also corralled two groundballs. As a team, Tech was 100 percent on clear opportunities, converting all 18 chances in the game.

The Tech defense played well, only allowing Radford to take nine shots all game. Tech forced the Highlanders into 17 turnovers and grabbed 19 groundballs, compared to eight. The Hokies used all three goalies on the roster in the game, with Meagh Graham winning her sixth game of the year, and Sydney Gagnon making two saves. Charlie Fix saw her first action of 2017.

With the win, the Hokies have already eclipsed their win total from last season with 11 games left to play in the season.

Tech returns to Thompson Field on Wednesday, March 1 at 4 p.m. to take on the Elon Phoenix.
