Jake Grove arrived on the Virginia Tech campus as a lightly-recruited guard from Forest, Va. He left as a unanimous All-American, winner of the Rimington Trophy as the nation's top center, and a second-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders.

Heading into his junior season, Grove made the switch over to the center position and became a natural fit. By the time he headed into his final season, he was gaining headlines and recognition for his play. He was rewarded by being named to all five major All-America first teams. He was awarded the Dave Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's top collegiate center.

Grove had his jersey retired on Sept. 23, 2006, prior to a game against Cincinnati.

In 2002, the Virginia Tech athletics department developed a new policy on retiring jerseys. This special honor is bestowed to acknowledge an individual who has won an established national award in their sport, while allowing the number to continue to be worn by others. Tech will no longer retire numbers.
