BLACKSBURG – Hits were at a premium for the Virginia Tech offense on Friday afternoon at English Field at Union Park against No. 6 NC State, and the Wolfpack were able to even the ACC series with a 14-2 victory setting up a rubber match on Saturday.

NC State (22-5, 8-3 ACC) scored multiple runs in five innings, including the first on a three-run home run by Will Wilson, all the offense starting pitcher Johnny Piedmonte needed for his fourth win of the season. Josh McLain led the Wolfpack offense with four RBI, while Brock Deatherage had four hits and scored three times.

Tech (11-14, 5-6 ACC) was limited to just a walk in the fifth and a hit batsman in the sixth before getting to Piedmonte in the seventh. Back-to-back singles and a walk in the seventh loaded the bases and Sam Fragale’s team-leading fifth sacrifice fly scored Tom Stoffel, giving Fragale his team-leading 17th RBI.

The Hokies plated their other run in the eighth off the bat of Stoffel, who singled for the second time in the game to register his team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the year and the 50th of his career. The hit drove home Cam Irvine.
